Oral Hygiene means keeping your mouth and teeth clean and avoids problems like cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. If not taken proper care, your teeth can be damaged and cause cavities and ultimately fall off. Everyone has only heard about teeth falling during childhood. However, unhygienic teeth may have to be removed for adults as well.

Some of you reading this article might wonder why do we need to understand about a practice you follow everyday? Everyone brushes their teeth at least once if not twice in a day. But, is that sufficient for the long healthy life of your teeth? No, it is not. What seems to be healthy teeth now might become a problem a few years later. So, how do I take care of my teeth? Read on further to understand the step by step guide for a good oral hygiene.

1) Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth after you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep at night are the best times to clean your teeth. Though at times it is recommended to brush after having a meal that contains stuff that sticks between your teeth as well as after eating sweet food. Cleaning the teeth helps remove the food stuck in your teeth as well as the dental plaque and tartar from the teeth. This helps prevent gum problems and tooth decay or cavities.

Brushing your teeth before sleeping helps remove all the particles stuck inside the teeth that can convert into bacteria overnight and damage the teeth.

Choosing the right kind of toothpaste & brush as per your teeth is also important. Spending as many as 10 seconds on each tooth while brushing is sufficient for good dental care.

2) Tongue Cleaning

Bad breath is mostly generated due to the bacteria that reside in the dorsal area of the tongue. Cleaning the tongue with tongue cleaners help remove this bacteria to avoid bad breath as well as avoid further dental problems.

You can use a tongue cleaner that comes as a whole or you toothbrushes that have the tongue cleaners on the backside of the bristles.

3) Flossing

Although brushing cleans 80% of the teeth, there are certain areas where even the finest of the toothbrush may not reach. In such cases, you can use a dental floss that can be pulled between the teeth. Flossing is recommended to be done once in a day at least and can be done at home.


4) Gargling

Not always required, but still recommended. Gargling helps kill the bacteria at the back of the tongue as well as leaving the mouth with a fresh flavor. It helps reduce bad breath. Apart from the above listed daily care, a visit to the dentist once in 3 or 6 months is essential to ensure oral hygiene.

The daily care though avoids any teeth problems; it may not necessarily maintain your teeth color. Research has proven that the teeth whitening products help retain your white teeth color as well as making it one shade brighter.
